LACMA Mobile

A mobile app for iOS and Android platforms offering location-specific content as you move through the museum, narrative audio tours, and access to the museum’s collection of over 120,000 objects in the palm of your hand.

About

Eyes on the Art. In partnership with Qualcomm, this project was an early experiment into the use of contextual awareness, delivering location-specific content as visitors moved around the museum’s campus.

Innovation + Tradition. In designing for a wide demographic of audiences, the LACMA app offered new content delivery formats, like podcast-style museum tours, alongside more traditional offerings, like keypad-accessed audio stops. This approach allowed us to enable new experiences with the artwork while capitalizing on familiar visitor interaction models.

Small Screen, Big Access. The lightweight application connected into the Museum’s content management system, making content edits easy and providing access to existing online resources. This proved to be a major success, allowing access to high-resolution imagery and metadata for over 100,000 museum objects in a simple but comprehensive mobile search interface.
